PCI DSS - The Security Standard to Avoid Identity Theft and Credit Card Fraud

Using internet has now become important for all. It is impossible to live without it as many different tasks can never get completed in the absence of internet. Also, a wide majority of people now relies on internet for shopping purposes. But, many of these people have to face different issues and identity theft is one of the worst.

When it comes online shopping, most people prefer making use of their credit cards. Even though they know they can lose their credit card information by doing so, they still make use of this plastic money over the internet. But, the good thing is that now people don't have to worry about the use of credit card on internet as new technologies are now available to ensure the security of credit card information.

One good way of dealing with identity theft is the introduction of PCI Data Security Standard. All of the largest card issuers including Visa, American Express, MasterCard and Discover have issued this security standard to all of the credit card processing companies. The use of this standard is to foster security of the credit card information of all customers.

PCI DSS was originally launched in 2004 but undergone quite a few changes and updates. This is considered to be a great option to stop identity theft and credit card fraud. But, it is significant to mention that there are lots of opponents who don't think the same. These opponents believe that PCI DSS is an ineffective standard and it can do nothing to protect electronic data. In fact, they say this standard makes things difficult for retailers and they don't become able to conduct business in a smooth way.

Though it is true to some extent that this standard interferes and hinders the smooth processing of different tasks but it still helps in stopping the identity theft. Plus, the introduction of new and latest updates has made it even stronger. With new updates, PCI DSS has become much more flexible and simple to use. The best thing about this particular standard is that it is not like other security standards. In other security standards individual requirements are either too blurred or too prescriptive. But, that is not the case with PCI DSS and that's the reason why there is an increase in PCI-compliant companies.

It is fact that even in this technologically blessed age it is not possible to eliminate identity theft altogether. But, it is possible to slow down the ID theft and credit card fraud epidemics. This can be done by becoming PCI-compliant. But, it is also a fact that there are many other sophisticated security standards and almost all of them do nothing for newer attacks. It is due to this particular reason that it will still take some time to take the number of identity theft attacks to its minimum.
