As a responsible adult individual, you usually keep on top of your finances. You take advantage of the various low percentage (or even zero percentage) interest rates available on credit cards and make your payments by the due date as shown on your statement.

However, some recent occurrences have caught your attention and made you think it is possible you have become a victim of identity theft.

The phone calls from debt collectors, a request for credit being turned down or the receipt of a new credit card which you have not applied for should all send out warning signals that something is amiss. The first thing you should do is take immediate action by checking your credit report, and then notifying the relevant fraud departments and law enforcement agencies of anything you know to be incorrect.

Report to the Fraud Departments

Experian, Equifax and TransUnion are the three credit bureaus to whom you should report the possibility of fraud victimisation. Although each bureau will pass the information on to the others as a matter of course, it is wise to report to all three bureaus personally. Your account will then be flagged by the credit bureaus which means that potential creditors will be required to make a telephone call to the person actually applying for credit. The flagging will normally last for 90 days and you will be notified of additional rights afforded you are entitled to. A free copy of your credit report can then be requested. In addition, it is strongly recommended that you formally ask the three bureaus to extend the time for the flagging of the account from ninety days to seven years.

Upon receiving the credit report it is essential for you to thoroughly check whether any fraudulent activity has occurred. If indeed fraud has been committed, you should inform the credit bureaus in writing and at this point the credit bureaus are obligated under the law to suppress the reflection of this fraudulent activity to other parties authorized to look at the personal credit report.

Report to the Law Enforcement Officials

As well as reporting identity theft to the credit bureaus, it is important to pass this information on to the Law Enforcement Officials. They will in turn file an official report. It is necessary for victims of identity theft to review the police report and make sure that full details of the fraudulent events are listed.

Take Responsibility For Your Own Continual Protection

Finally, it is essential for all victims of identity theft to take continued responsibility for their own protection. Credit reports should be checked within a few months of the filing of the initial fraudulent offence and followed up with frequent checks therein after. Monthly alerts reflecting any activity associated with the three credit bureaus are also available upon request.

The bottom line today is that you need to protect yourself and your loved ones from identity theft. Bookmark blogs on this topic like at LifeLockblog.com and keep up with identity theft updates by subscribing to the blog’s posts and comments.

With the passage of time things have improved a lot but there is still a lot of room for improvement. Everyone connected to internet needs to pay attention to his security but there is nothing to emphasize the importance of taking right security measures for e-businesses.

For e-businesses, it is not all about enhancing the security levels, in fact, it’s just the tip of iceberg as the real thing is to handle and manage those security threats and viruses that may have already hit the business.

Hacking and cracking has always been there in some form, but, new terms are constantly evolving like masquerading, spoofing, eavesdropping and many other suchlike things. As e-business is something that remains present all the time over the internet so it ought to face greater security threats. There are lots of ways which are used by people to breach the security of an e-business site to access the sensitive information. Among all those ways, hackers are someone who can be considered potential threats as they incorporate further technologies to obtain sensitive information without letting anyone know about their activities.

It is a well-known fact that hackers always try to break into the servers of banks, credit card companies and other large organizations. They do so to access financial information of people. But, it is also a fact that many e-business enterprises and online retailers have already switched to better identity protection and credit protection solutions. Due to this particular fact it is easier to use their service but it is important to keep in mind that shopping should be done only from authentic retailers.

Being a consumer, it is important for you to make sure that your sensitive information is safe. No doubt, you can do nothing to keep a hacker away from infiltrating a retailer’s database but you can still take some steps on your end to stay away from identity theft. First off, you need to realize the fact that implementing sophisticated security threat solutions is not possible for all retailers and e-businesses. There are chances that a retailer doesn’t have a system to keep your information safe and secure even it claims to have one. So, you need to wear belt and braces when using these online retailers and other such services.

The fact of the matter is that even though the e-businesses are now paying more attention to deal with identity theft but it is still better to take some steps on your own. Keeping your sensitive information safe is your responsibility and you must not trust anyone in this regard. So, take right security measures, install antivirus software, use firewalls and never ever give away your personal information to an unauthentic or unpopular website, even if it offers some products at unbelievably low price. The security of your identity is in your hands and only you can make things work for you.

With the advent of internet, lots of things have become easier. E-business has become an essential part of our lives and things have become even attractive with the betterment in efficiency and introduction of high speed internet. Many of the e-business related applications forms a relationship between suppliers, customers, employees and partners by providing them a ready access to all of the information they need.

However, the great benefits of e-business are suffering due to constant security threats. Security threats can be seen in all business environments, but, when you talk about internet business, you have to tackle a lot more complexities. When businesses get online, it becomes impossible to know who is accessing the system which is the reason why tackling the security issues is emphatic.

Although e-business enterprises face different types of security threats but one of the most annoying and damaging threats is identity theft. For e-business, security comes in many ways and all of them are important to consider. When there will be some financial transactions involved in e-business, the ratio of security threats will be higher. Plus, there would be more incidents of identity theft as these thieves need nothing but financial information.

E-business is all about transferring information over internet including sensitive financial information. To safeguard customers` information and for better processing of financial transactions, companies have to take different steps. However, steps to enhance the security features should be flexible which implies that it should not hinder the process of fluent transfer of files and information. That’s exactly the dilemma faced by e-business enterprises. If they go for some solutions, it hinders the smooth processing of information. For instance, different types of authentication methods and protocols are used to ensure that only authentic people access an account but these solutions always get in the way of smooth processing of information.

Another common issue faced by these e-business enterprises is about cost effectiveness of different solutions. Winning in these tough economic conditions is extremely difficult and in these circumstances a penny saved is a penny earned. So it becomes challenging for companies to invest a lot of money on the implementation of different identity theft solutions.

Although it seems difficult but both these problems can still be handled by using simple methods. One of the easiest ways to stop identity theft is the use of firewalls. Most of the identity theft issues are associated with the installation of spyware and other viruses. These viruses would stay away from your system if you install a firewall. Moreover, the use of antivirus software is another cost effective way of dealing with viruses and identity theft attacks.

The fact of the matter is that e-business enterprises need to take some concrete steps to reduce the chances of identity theft. Though they can always start things by investing in simple solutions but the fact remains that they need to go for more sophisticated solutions so they customer may get in touch with them with full confidence.

Business persons make strategic decision on different occasions to affect their business in a positive way. The timing and accuracy of these decisions always help to expand business in a much better way. Although decisions are to be taken about different business processes but in today’s world the most important decision is about taking right precautionary measures for the security of personal information of your customers.

When it comes to data security and privacy, many people find it to be a daunting task. Though it is somewhat tricky but you really don’t have to be an expert to implement certain strategies to avoid security breaches and identity theft. For the success of your business it is of immense importance that your customers believe in your services. They must have confidence in you otherwise they will never offer their personal information and without getting their information you will never be able to complete transactions. So, it is important to pay as much attention as possible to enhance the security of your company.

With a data breach and security theft, your company will not only face lawsuits but will also lose reputation. Once people lose their trust, it is hard to convince them to buy from you again. Keeping all these implications in mind, you must take some concrete steps to ensure a foolproof security. But, you must always keep few important things in mind when opting for right security solution for you.

First off, you need to remind yourself that firewalls are not enough. Firewalls only provide a small degree of protection against identity theft attacks and trusting them alone is the biggest mistake you will ever make. Although Firewalls are a good credit protection alternative you must not stop here.

Always keep in mind that security solution is not all about combining hardware and software solution. You can use firewalls, encryption, antivirus software and many other software and hard solutions but you can still lose information if your employees are not completely aware of the type of threats available today. For instance, it is easy for an employee to give away the credit card number to a caller after asking for his name and other such information. In this case, firewalls are there, encryption and antivirus software are in tact but sensitive information is gone.

Never proceed without knowing your weak points. You must determine the way used to collect, use and store information in your business. You must pay attention to the entire process along with considering the security measures that may already be in use. Making a complete plan will let you find out the points and areas requiring highest attention.

These three points should always be kept in mind when dealing with identity theft in your business enterprise. It doesn’t matter if you run a small, medium or large business, you need to pay high attention to the security aspect otherwise your business will never grow in the world teeming with all sorts of con artists.

You are no longer the only you.

By some means someone else has found out your Social Security Number, Driver’s License Number or other crucial information and suddenly they claim to be you.

You are not alone. Each year over 7 million people became victims of ID theft. That breaks down to just over 13 people per minute. Your new identical twin with the identical name is going crazy opening new charge cards and opening credit lines at banks of which you have never even heard.

Here are three steps that may help to stop what is happening.

Order a credit report. You are entitled to a report once a year anyway and should be checking it at least that often. If you believe that your ID was stolen then you are entitled to another report. Without this report, you will not know the extent of damage that has been done. Read it carefully looking for any discrepancies. If there are accounts not recognized, addresses that are not valid or inquires for credit that were not initiated by you, you have a problem.

If you discover a problem, immediately initiate a fraud alert with the credit bureaus. This adds an extra step of phone verification to your phone number in order to open new accounts, but also will cause a call to come to your phone if anyone else makes an attempt.

Contact all creditors including those who have opened accounts that are fraudulent. Dispute any fraudulent charges. You have sixty days in which to do this. If you wait any longer, you can be liable for the charges, even if they are fraudulent.

Some of the companies may require a police report be filed. This is a good idea, as it can also be very useful later if you have to go to court.

Unfortunately, it will take time to repair this damage. Many victims will spend several months in the process. On the average this may cost you $1,400 cash and about 600 hours of your time to clean up this mess.

Federal law provides a mandatory prison sentence of 2 years on those who are convicted of stealing your identity. If they use that identity for terrorist acts, they will have minimum 5-year prison sentence.

If you have any indication that you identity has been stolen, act quickly. The reputation you save may be your own.
