How to Recover from Identity Theft
If you are a victim of ID theft, you may find it hard to cope with the situation and fail to put in place proper measures to aid in recovery. Trying to understand what is best to do after such an incident can be hard, especially if you lose a lot in the process. Here is what you need to do as part of your recovery plan.

The first thing to do when you realize you have been defrauded is to contact your creditor or bank. By filing a complaint, you will assist in tracking down the thieves. This will also allow for freezing of your account to avoid any more misuse of funds. Be sure to write a statement on the theft in the police station because they will later be involved in the investigation, tracking down and consequent arrest of the perpetrators. Provide full information to the relevant authorities to aid in solving the matter. Your may forward the mails, and give out the phone numbers that the crooks used to lure you into a financial crunch.
The next step is to take charge of your credit card account and bank account. Start by putting your credit card in a monitoring or identity protection program which sends fraud alerts to you in case one wants to misuse it. You will also have to start reviewing your credit reports more often to identify any malicious withdrawals or purchases. Ensure that your address remains unchanged so as to receive all your mail which contain important information.
If any fake accounts have been opened in your name, contact the bank and have them closed. Follow all the steps that are required in reporting and closing down of such accounts. You will need to contact all financial institutions that were involved with transactions in such accounts for further clarification. Get some clearance e.g. in form of letters from the concerned companies stating that the matters have been solved amicably.
You should not react when in such a situation. The best thing is to relax and take control. Search for advice from relevant quarters to assist in solving the matter. Identity theft is a serious problem, but if you are hit, the situation CAN be resolved if you follow the guidance outlined above.
