Study Done on Canadian Businesses and Hackers

In a study released on Tuesday it has showed two things.  The first thing that this report showed was that government insiders have stolen more data than ever before.  The second thing the report showed was that the hackers who are attacking organizations in Canada are very determined to make money in targeted campaigns.  Since 2008, the report shows that the number of data breaches in Canada plus the cost of dealing with the data breaches have spiked.

On average, a public company in Canada has suffered eighteen breaches in 2011, which has gone up from twelve data breaches in 2010.  An upside is that the Government bodies were able to reverse the trend of data breaches.  In 2010 there were over twenty-two data breaches and in 2011 there have only been seventeen.  In the government sector insider breaches, which is where an employee accesses confidential information deliberately, spiked.  In private and public companies insider breaches declined.  Of the data breaches in Government bodies, forty-two were perpetuated by insiders.

The weapons used for data breaches by hackers most commonly use are a collection of worms, spyware, viruses, spam, and malware.  Two other popular ones are pharming and Phishing.   For all organization types, the costs that are directly associated with security breaches dropped to an average of almost eighty-three thousand dollars.  In 2010 this figure was more than one hundred seventy-nine thousand dollars and in 2009 it was eight hundred thirty-four thousand dollars.
