1.    Keep your wallet safe
Your wallet probably carries your ID card, credit card, ATM card and all other important documents without which your daily life cannot run normally. Always be conscious of your wallet or purse. Do not give access to your personal cards, PIN numbers or passwords persons of unknown character. In case you lose such documents, report to the relevant authorities especially banks, so as to cancel your credits and freeze your accounts to prevent thieves from misusing them.

2.  Report any suspicious activities
Any errors or unexpected expenditure on your bank account or credit may mean someone has been stealing from you. Report to the creditor or bank and seek clarifications and advice. Be sure to file a police report in case of identity theft for appropriate action to be taken.

3.    Safeguard your mail
Avoid unsolicited offers so as to make your email account less attractive to identity thieves. Any offers you receive by regular mail should be shredded before they are discarded. Cancel all mail if you are on vacation and report spam mails to your internet service provider. Do not send sensitive information via email as they may be tapped.

4.   Protect your SSN
Your Social Security Number (SSN) is one important and sensitive piece of information. Do not write it anywhere on forms just because it has been asked for. Avoid the habit of carrying your social security card in your purse or wallet and instead, use a photocopy. Always question those who ask for your SSN, even in situations where it must be provided and instead ask to provide alternative information if possible.

5.    Keep sensitive documents safe
Documents such as certificates, cards and other important personal documents should be stored in a safe or a bank’s safe custody. Do not allow anyone to access such information as they may use it against you.
